The jockstrap has an unusual position in men's underwear. Almost everyone knows what one is. Far fewer men have worn one. And the ones who have tend to keep wearing them, which suggests the garment is doing something the alternatives are not.
This is a practical guide: what a jockstrap actually is, how it should fit, how to wear one, and the honest case for and against.
What a jockstrap is
A jockstrap is three parts. A pouch at the front that holds and supports. A waistband. And two elastic straps that run from the back of the waistband, down and around the outside of each cheek, joining the base of the pouch.
The defining feature is what is missing. There is no fabric across the seat at all. Unlike a thong, which runs a narrow strip between the cheeks, a jockstrap leaves the entire back open and the straps pass around the outside.
That is the whole design, and it has barely changed since the 1870s, when the garment was created for bicycle riders working cobblestone streets and needing support that ordinary underwear did not provide.
Why men actually wear them
There are four reasons, and they are not all the reason people assume.
Support. The contoured pouch lifts and holds rather than compressing. For a long day standing, for the gym, or for anything involving impact, that is a functional difference you notice within an hour.
Airflow. The open back means nothing traps heat or moisture across the seat. In summer, or under heavy trousers, this is the single biggest practical advantage the jockstrap has over every other cut. Anyone who has spent a hot day in cotton boxer briefs understands the problem it solves.
No bunching, no riding up. There is no fabric across the seat to shift, roll, or gather. Nothing to adjust.
How it looks. This is a real reason and there is no point pretending otherwise. The jockstrap frames rather than covers, and plenty of men wear one because they like what it does for the silhouette. That is a perfectly good reason to buy underwear.
How a jockstrap should fit
Most complaints about jockstraps come down to fit, and fit comes down to three checks.
The waistband should sit flat and level. It should stay put without you thinking about it, and it should not dig or roll. If it is rolling, it is too small. If it is sliding, it is too large.
The pouch should hold without compressing. A properly contoured pouch supports and lifts. You should feel held, not squeezed. If you feel flattened, the pouch is cut too shallow for you.
The leg straps should follow the crease where your glute meets your thigh. This is the one most people get wrong. The straps are not meant to sit across the middle of the cheek and they are not meant to ride up. They should sit in the natural crease, snug enough to stay there through movement, loose enough that they leave no mark when you take it off.
If the straps cut in or leave a deep line, size up. If they slide out of the crease when you walk, size down.
How to put one on
Step in through the waistband with both legs, the same way you would with any underwear, then pull it up so the waistband sits at your natural waistline. Settle the pouch first, then reach back and run a finger along each leg strap to seat it in the crease.
That last step takes two seconds and is the difference between a jockstrap that stays comfortable all day and one you fidget with. Most men who say a jockstrap did not work for them skipped it.
What to wear one under
Under jeans and heavier trousers: straightforward. The support and airflow are the point and nothing shows.
Under a suit: workable, with one caveat. The leg straps can occasionally register as a faint line under very lightweight wool or very close-cut trousers. Under structured tailoring you will not see anything. Under summer-weight fabric, check in a mirror in daylight first. If you want a guaranteed no-line option for tailoring, a thong or a seamless sculpted short is the safer choice, and we cover that in detail in our guide to what to wear under dress trousers.
At the gym: this is the garment's original job. Support where you need it, nothing across the seat to hold sweat.
Under lounge or sleepwear: the airflow argument applies just as much at home. A jockstrap under a pair of satin lounge pants is a genuinely comfortable combination on a warm evening.
On its own: which is, for a lot of men, the actual answer.
Choosing your first one
Start plain. A jockstrap in a matte fabric and a neutral colour tells you whether the cut suits you without the fabric being a variable.
Our Ligne Men's Jockstrap is built for exactly that. Smooth matte finish, no hardware, no print, a contour pouch and a classic open-frame back in high-stretch fabric. It comes in black, gray, blue and red at $64. It is the one to reach for without thinking about it.
Once you know the cut works for you, the fabric becomes the interesting part:
The Éclat Men's Jockstrap is the same construction in a liquid-metallic stretch fabric with a high shine. Black and red, $62. Built for evenings rather than errands.
The Mirage Men's Jockstrap is cut in an iridescent leopard print, a holographic wash of teal, lilac and rose over an animal-print base that shifts as you move. $67.
The Men's Strapped Mesh Jock Brief takes the open-back architecture further, adding structured strapping across the hip and sheer mesh thigh bands. Black, $72. It reads as a designed piece rather than as underwear.
Sizing
The men's collection is sized S/M and L/XL. Two sizes rather than eight, because the fabrics are high-stretch and the cuts are built to move. For a jockstrap specifically, the size that matters is the waistband, so size to your waist and let the straps do their job.
How to care for one
The elastic in the waistband and leg straps is what fails first in any jockstrap, and heat is what kills elastic. Wash cold, on a gentle cycle or by hand, in a mesh bag if you are using a machine. Never tumble dry. Lay flat or hang to air dry.
Skip fabric softener entirely. It coats elastic fibres and reduces their recovery, which is the exact property you are paying for. There is more detail in our guide to caring for luxury lingerie, and it applies to men's pieces without modification.
The honest case against
Worth saying plainly, because a guide that only lists advantages is not useful.
A jockstrap gives you no coverage across the seat, which some men simply do not want. The leg straps take a few wears to stop being noticeable. It is not the right choice under very thin, very close-cut trousers if a completely invisible line is non-negotiable. And if you dislike the feeling of anything sitting in the glute crease, no amount of good construction will change that.
None of those are reasons not to try one. They are just the things nobody mentions.
Frequently asked questions
How should a jockstrap fit?
The waistband sits flat and level at your natural waist. The pouch holds without compressing. The leg straps sit in the crease where the glute meets the thigh, snug enough to stay put, loose enough to leave no mark.
Can you wear a jockstrap every day?
Yes. The support and airflow make it a practical everyday option, and many men who try one for a specific occasion end up wearing them routinely.
Can you wear a jockstrap under jeans?
Yes, and denim is one of the easiest fabrics to wear one under. Nothing shows and you get the airflow benefit under heavy fabric.
Do jockstraps show under trousers?
Usually not. Under very lightweight or very close-cut trousers the leg straps can occasionally register as a faint line. Under structured tailoring, denim, or anything of normal weight, they do not.
What is the difference between a jockstrap and a thong?
A thong runs a narrow strip of fabric between the cheeks. A jockstrap has no fabric there at all, and instead uses two elastic straps that pass around the outside of each cheek, leaving the seat open.
Are jockstraps only for athletes?
No. The garment was built for cyclists in the 1870s and the support and airflow still work exactly as intended, but most men buying one today are buying it for everyday comfort or for how it looks, and both are perfectly ordinary reasons.
Where to start
A matte black jockstrap, sized to your waist, worn with the leg straps properly seated. If it works for you, the rest of the category opens up from there.
